The Handwriting Without Tears Curriculum
Handwriting Without Tears is widely used across the nation in public and private schools. HWOT aims to make legible and fluent handwriting an easy and automatic skill that every student can master. It’s unique and compelling curriculum design and teaching strategies facilitate this goal. HWOT uses multi-sensory techniques and developmental props for letter building and recognition that young children delight in using such as magis slates, play dough, and puzzles. The curriculum itself is set to music, making writing time fun and meaningful.
Assessments and Journals for Preschool and 4K
We use The Creative Curriculum for Preschool’s Assessment System to assess how each child is meeting the state standards. Curriculum goals and objectives are planned and much of the year is spent collecting work samples and documenting facts put into portfolios and later used for analyzing and evaluating progress and growth. Children’s acquisition of process skills are evaluated to find out exactly where they fall along the developmental continuum. A plan for each child, as well as the classroom, is devised along with individual goals and objectives in mind as the teachers plan daily activities. We assess our children twice a year. Once in the Fall and again in the Spring. Conferences are held to share work samples and observations collected in portfolios as well as to work with families to develop a plan for individual children’s growth and continued development in important areas necessary for school readiness.
Numbers and Math, Language, and Literacy
The Handwriting without Tears products also provides us with Language and Literacy and Numbers and Math curriculums. These curriculums are a hands-on approach to introduce and expand the children’s knowledge and awareness of math and literacy.
