This one is a Gem
I do not have a child that attended this camp, but this is the second summer in a row that my annual family trip to Devil’s Lake has overlapped with Kids Junction being at the lake for the day. And for two summers now, I am just blown away by how professional, qualified, and kind the staff members are.
What I have witnessed twice now are adults that demonstrate respect for the children in their care, and then that respect is mirrored right back to them. The campers are allowed the freedom to discover, but at the same time, are always being looked after. The leaders guide and encourage gently. They speak respectfully to the campers and the campers respectfully speak back. There is no yelling. In fact, there aren’t even raised voices. I witnessed conversation, interaction, and play. So much play and so much joy. The children in their care are nurtured and it was a beautiful thing to watch unfold.
In addition, I wanted to commend them for including two children on the spectrum. As the parent of a teen with Down syndrome, I’m always on high alert when I see children with special needs out-and-about in groups. Both campers were supported, encouraged, included, and safe. It was a beautiful thing to see.
If you are seeking a summer camp for your children, look no further. This one is a gem.
